   SPW Nepal

SPW has been working in Nepal since 1991 through a formal agreement with the Nepalese government. Nepal is one of the largest SPW country operations with more than 120 volunteers each year. The main office is based in Kathmandu, the capital, where 12 members of staff work to ensure a quality programme for all stakeholders. SPW volunteers work primarily with children and young people in deprived rural areas across several districts of Nepal. For extended periods of up to eight months in the field, they act as change agents, transferring knowledge and skills and empower young people and their communities to identify and address local problems.

Volunteers develop young people’s understanding about important health issues that affect them and their communities. They focus specifically on nutrition, hygiene and sanitation, adolescent sexual and reproductive health and the rapidly escalating threat of HIV/AIDS in Nepal, working to address the fundamental social and economic aspects of these subjects as well as the medical. Volunteers use their peer influence and a variety of non-formal education techniques including games, drama and art to explore these often sensitive topics with other young people. They further mobilise them to take action to ensure a healthy lifestyle for themselves and their communities. Youth-led outreach activities include health awareness campaigns and events, health camps and small-scale projects to improve the local health conditions. These not only have a social function, but also develop essential life skills such as leadership, effective communication, critical thinking, and self-esteem, which empower young people to protect themselves in high-risk situations.
Volunteers ensure that outreach health efforts involve school teachers and head-teachers, community based organisations, local government health officials, health practitioners and service providers in order that health awareness reaches all sectors of society, and that local facilities are fully utilised and tailored to needs.
